The weight of Innocence
The Weight of Innocence The Weight of Innocence is a body of work inspired by my experiences in Benue State during my NYSC year, particularly in Ikpayongo. Living among children in rural communities made me pay closer attention to the realities of their lives—their energy, curiosity, resilience, and the responsibilities they often carry at a very young age. These children laugh, play, dream, and explore the world like children everywhere. Yet many of them also work on farms, help support their families, and grow up in environments where access to quality education, sanitation, and opportunities remains limited. Despite these challenges, they continue to move through life with hope and determination. Through portraiture and symbolic use of color, I explore the contrast between innocence and responsibility, possibility and limitation, joy and hardship. The works do not seek to portray these children as victims, but as individuals full of potential, navigating circumstances beyond their control. At its core, The Weight of Innocence is a reflection on childhood—what it means to grow, dream, and carry unseen burdens while still holding onto wonder. It invites viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the lives, strengths, and futures of children whose stories are often overlooked.
